Dagestan car bombing kills police officer

KHASAVYURT, Russia, Oct. 24 (UPI) -- A suicide car bomber in the Russian republic of Dagestan killed one police officer and injured two others, security officials reported Sunday.

Russia's Interior Ministry said an off-road vehicle packed with explosives ran a checkpoint at a police compound in the city of Khasavyurt and blew up Saturday.

The southern republic has been the scene of frequent bombings and clashes between security forces and Muslim separatists.

Hospital officials reported 10 people had been brought in for treatment after the blast, RIA Novosti reported. Many of the injuries were described by police as minor.
