As for Muhammad being a man of his time ~ the thing is Jesus was born more than 500 years before him and his behaviour is that of someone you could actually follow. One of the issues with Jesus' behaviour was perhaps it was too humble. Muhammad on the other hand ~ who Muslims have said Jesus would have followed, did some things that in today's world you would end up in prison.

Muhammad in the Christian sense would have been a little bit deluded ~ he thought that by not for example eating pork ~ he could rape, murder, steal. But this directly contracts what Jesus said and that is it is not what goes into a man that defiles him but what comes out. Or his actions. It does not make any logical sense that Jesus would have followed Muhammad in these acts. And if ~ as Muhammad did with so many men put a sword to his throat to ensure his allegiance ~ the Jesus of the bible would have accepted death.

But I think that Muhammad did not think that he was following Jesus ~ I think he thought he was following the religion of the Kaaba. His family the Quraish had been in charge of the Kaaba for 700 years, and when he took Mecca the aim was to take the kaaba. After Muhammad's death when the Koran was complied ~ in Syria ~ the scholars there added in the more convincing Judeo-Christian text. The Koran is written in Syriac and Old Arabic ~ that is where you get the famous discrepancy where the original Arabic, says when you die as a martyr you will receive a bunch or 72 grapes and the Syriac version, it states that martyrs will receive 72 virgins. The problem was that at the time no one could read the text our of Arabia. Further there may have been war between the two Islamic factions. It is likely that the scholars of the time knew that this religion didn't have a chance if it was based around the kaaba, simply with all the Gods but one removed. To give it the same validity, as the very popular Christianity and Judaism religions it had to be seen as a continuation of these. Unfortunately for Muslims this is the ghost of Islam's past.
