Russia delays defence missiles to Iran

Russia has delayed the delivery of air defence missiles to Iran, citing technical reasons for the hold-up.

The missile deal has met with objections from the United States and Israel. This week Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Moscow to cancel the order. The two countries are concerned that Tehran plans to use the missiles to defend nuclear installations, amidst fears that Iran is working on a nuclear weapons programme.

Neither Israel nor the United States has ruled out the possibility of air strikes to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
