Iran's cleansing process - of all deemed un-Islamic! They claim they are drug traffickers - who by the way should not be hung - but because the Iranian authorities have not released names and details of the deceased - some suspect that those executed could be opposition protesters. Per capita - between Iran and Saudi Arabia - kill more people than other country.
Tehran, 5 August (AKI) - Twenty-four people have been hanged in western Iran after being convicted of drug trafficking, according to Iran Human Rights. Citing a report from the Iranian news site, Borna News, the rights group said the executions took place last Thursday in Rajaee Shahr prison in Karaj, 160 kms northwest of Tehran.
The report quoted Tehran’s vice-prosecutor Mahmoud Salar-Kia, who said the 24 had been convicted of drug trafficking and their death sentence had been approved by the Iranian supreme court.
None of those executed were identified by name.
"We are very concerned about the high number of executions," said Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, spokesman for Iran Human Rights. "The number of executions in July are the highest monthly numbers in many years".
He said most of those executed were not identified by name and no-one is certain that the charges in the authorities' reports are true.
"The world community must condemn these executions which are meant to spread fear among the people," he said.
More than 300 people are believed to have been executed in Iran in 2008 and its execution rate is second only to China.
