Muslim model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno to be caned for drinking beer: Malaysian court

The rotan is aimed at making the accused repent and serves as a lesson to Muslims.

It appears the hotel night club was busted - which again brings into focus modern hotels in the Islamic world. It is a point of contention that Islamic law is often not enforced inside them - which some suggest is one of the reasons why they are being attacked by jihadists - besides being easy targets.

A religious court in Malaysia has sentenced a tearful Singaporean Muslim model to six strokes of the cane after she drank beer in a nightclub, reports said on Tuesday.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol at a hotel nightclub in the eastern state of Pahang last year, the New Straits Times newspaper reported.

"We feel the sentence is fair after going through the prosecution's argument and since the rotan (cane) is provided for in the law," Pahang Sharia High Court judge Abdul Rahman Yunus said, according to the paper.

"The rotan is aimed at making the accused repent and serves as a lesson to Muslims," he added, also fining Kartika 5,000 ringgit ($A1,731).

The model, who cried when the judgement was delivered, said she would appeal.

State religious officials could not be reached for comment on the case.

Malaysia, which has large Indian and Chinese minorities freely enjoying alcohol, has a two-track legal system. Civil courts operate alongside state-based sharia courts, which can try Muslims for religious offences.

Its sick that she's getting caned, especially when the Judge who prosecuted her is likely to be an alcoholic as it is. Hierachy puts woman under men, especially in Malaysia... and especially in Islam....

Sharia law is repulsive. It should not be permitted in a civilized world.

its ridiculoius how there are separate laws for people in that country based on what religion you are...

Malaysia is moving in the wrong direction... No respect for peoples rights or liberties

This story is a red herring. It is of no importance that this woman receives a religious caning. This is nothing compared to the torture which Malaysia enforces on men in its judicial system. The only importance of this story is to draw attention to the suffering of men.

Men subject to judicial corporal punishment in Malaysia are permanently branded if they receive more than four strokes. Such severe punishment is equivalent to cutting into the skin with a razor, taking hold of a strip of skin, then ripping the flesh.

The punishment is carried out with a thumb thick rattan of which the lower third is soaked over night in brine. This is important because, after striking the victim, this flexible lower section is DRAGGED across the skin and strips the skin off as it passes.

Malaysia’s prison system made a video of the process that can be found here

Perhaps the slogan for this country should be “Malaysia, truly Ancient.”

why should she get caned... Is islam forced into a person... If she want to drink something just let her drink it....why should there be a third person to take care of her...if you say drinking is bad for health which is true...then she has to know that....why is she being punished for not taking care of her health...it is her body...anything she does is effecting her body... not the all the people who is an Islam...there are a lot of Islam people who is smoking...which is prohibite3d by Islam...why arent they canned...i have a lot to comment on this but i cant... I say it is a bad decision to cane her her doing since she is going to carry her own sins for herself...

Yes. Today is a free world . I can fu** all your mother if we like each other and you shouldn't say anything . Because this is a free world . And I say all your priest is liar because they can't forgive your sins since it all lies. If it so true to you, so be it. And be it to moslem,if it so true to them so be it. Be them with their believe and keep your own to yourself.

For those of you who doubt the idea of Islamic civilization, I have a question to ask. How intelligent/dumb are you?

In any civilization in this world, there are sets of rules based on values of society developed way back to times we can only read in history books. There is no such thing as right or wrong in civilizations. We are just plain different, you morons.

What can actually be seen here is the implementation of a religious culture. In Islam, alcoholic beverages are prohibited because they cause more harm than good. Avoid alcohol, you avoid ugly and hideous beer bellies, you avoid getting drunk and smacking your wife/children, you avoid drunk driving any obviously plenty more.

Why some of you feel that this punishment to Kartika is rather harsh is because of your lack of understanding or rather not wanting to understand why certain things happen. And maybe one other reason is the creeping feeling of superiority over another race you consider less or 'uncivilized'.

My message for you, send your brain to the nearest service center for servicing and tune-up. Consider adding proper additives for your brain to think better.

simply rhetorical. shame on both parties. im not siding anybody but lets look it at a different perspective, she chose to drink. she's the one who make that decision. it's already wrong that she's in a club during the fasting month, let alone drink in front of many. tapi itu dosa dia. bukan kita. lagian, it's between her and the Almighty. not us, the humans, the hamba Allah. we are not prophets, we are in no position basically whereby Allah instructed us on what to do to the corrupted minds of the people. Allah itu maha adil, maha penyayang, maha pengampun. Manusia aja yang MELEBIH! you're just a bloody judge who depends on a monthly salary just like everybody else, you think you can order whatsoever? i find this actually dumb. to let it become an issue is already deluding, let alone telling us what sharia laws rules bla bla bla~ c'mon la, rather than you actually pursue on this matter, i think you better go look on solutions to making the world a better place to live lagi bagos! and for what is worse, i think the whole men lot suma dayus. dk why.

Well,to blame Islam isn't right. Christians are just as bad if not worse. They were prosecuting people indiscriminately since the dawn of time forcing their views on others. The simple acceptance in any society is to repect the various laws that govern them. As long as islamic law is for islamic people whom took up the belief. There should be no rebuttal. In Malaysia at least,Syariah Law isnt applicable to a non-muslim. I see not a problem. Islam is after all a choice (this varies if you're a malay or not i suppose). In the end, nothing is perfect and let bygones be bygones. Civilized worlds once included Apartheid South Afrika and Australia and Anti-Black America. The sentiments remained although there are progress..So there is no perfect system.
