Iran: Condoms on sale in public places in new reality check

First admit that you are an alcoholic - then take steps to deal with it. Iran with all its religious rules - upon rules – has failed to defeat the underside of human nature. Being situated on the borders of Afghanistan – Iran is the first port of call for the opium produced and on its way to the western world - have to face up to the fact that they do have a problem with the drug and the sex and disease that goes along with it and like the western societies those in the Islamic world are all to ready to condemn - they too are forced to manage problem - and are now making condoms and syringes readily available to anyone who needs one.

Tehran, 18 April (AKI) - Five automatic condom dispensers have been installed in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

"From these automatic dispensers, you can buy condoms as well as syringes," said Mohammad Reza Jahani, head of a centre that is fighting drug dependence.

In the past, Iran provided free syringes to drug addicts, but promoting condom use to avoid the spread of sexual diseases during sex is unprecedented.

Anyone who has sexual relations outside marriage faces severe punishment under the law.

According to the latest statistics on the fight against drug addiction, at least 1.3 million Iranians use drugs on a daily basis.

Of the total, 45 percent of Iranian drug addicts regularly use heroin and crack, 8 percent have substituted drugs with methadone tablets, while the rest smoked opium. Last year nine people died each day from drug use, according to official sources.
